Tanzania Student Files 1960-1974.

The files are arranged alphabetically by student. They start with the letter G, so there may be a set of files missing. A few students began the process under one name and ended under another name, a fairly common African practice. Both surnames are listed, linked by or, with the more recent surname listed first. The records consist of applications, travel documents, progress reports, expense statements, medical reports, transcripts, and correspondence. The preponderance of the correspondence is to or from Pedersen. A few extend into Pedersen's tenure with the DWME. The letters to the students include encouragement, advice (both routine and admonitory), and much about finance. The letters from the students frequently deal with allowances and with hopes of extending their time in the U.S. There is frequent correspondence between Pedersen and the liaisons for the institutions. There is also correspondence between Pedersen and the local church body. Some of the correspondence is in Swahili, in which Pedersen was apparently fluent. A few files contain only the application forms and letters of students who applied but were not granted scholarships.
